Premier League Clubs Continue to Embrace Gambling Sponsorships

Despite increasing scrutiny from the UK government, English Premier League (EPL) teams are still benefiting from sponsorships with gambling operators that lack proper licensing.

Recently, Newcastle United became the latest club to secure such a partnership, aligning itself with 8Xbet as its official Asian betting partner.

Sean Connell, an expert in sports sponsorship, shared insights on why clubs persist in collaborating with unlicensed gambling firms. He emphasized that for many EPL teams, especially those not in the top tier, sponsorship revenue is vital for their financial stability. This income directly influences their transfer budgets and, consequently, their competitive edge on the field.

Connell noted that the experience surrounding the ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships reveals how clubs react to regulatory timelines. As long as these partnerships are legal, teams are likely to continue capitalizing on available revenue.

Regarding the UK government's recent announcements, Connell expressed skepticism about any immediate changes. He pointed out that uncertainty around Asian betting partners would likely lead clubs to maintain or renew their sponsorship agreements as long as they remain legal. Historically, financial flows in sponsorship markets tend to persist until regulations explicitly outlaw a category.

The UK government is currently reviewing whether to impose restrictions on such sponsorships. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy previously indicated the government's intent to address gambling sponsorships in sports, deeming it inappropriate for major football clubs to be associated with these brands.

However, the announcement lacked specifics on the timeline or methods for potential action. A consultation is slated to begin in spring 2026, followed by a report.

Lawmakers have raised concerns about UK residents engaging with black-market gambling sites, citing connections to organized crime and inadequate responsible gambling measures. They argue that banning these companies from sponsoring British sports teams could significantly diminish their visibility.

Currently, EPL clubs are not eager to sever ties with unlicensed operators, as many have existing agreements that extend for several years. Newcastle’s partnership with 8Xbet illustrates that clubs are still forging new sponsorship deals.

It remains to be seen how long clubs will continue these gambling partnerships before any regulatory changes are enforced. The EPL had previously opted to voluntarily ban gambling sponsors from appearing on team jerseys in April 2023.
