Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW) has announced the impending closure of its popular brand, LuckyLand Slots, which will officially cease operations on September 14. This marks the end of an eight-year journey for one of the most recognized names in the sweepstakes casino sector. Customers were informed via email that the shutdown will occur in stages, starting with the cessation of purchases, followed by gameplay, and ultimately concluding with prize redemptions.
Importantly, this decision will not impact VGW's other offerings, which include Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Casino, and Global Poker.
The phased shutdown will follow this timeline:
- August 3, 2026: Players will no longer be able to buy Gold Coin packages, although existing Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins can still be utilized.
- August 24, 2026: Gameplay will end, but players will still have the opportunity to redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes.
- September 14, 2026: Prize redemptions will be permanently closed, and access to LuckyLand Slots will be terminated.
In the closure announcement, VGW expressed gratitude to its customers for “eight years of offering magical, exciting experiences,” emphasizing that this decision does not affect its other products.
The introduction of LuckyLand Casino in December 2025 hinted at the brand's future direction, as VGW expanded beyond slot games to include table games and social live casino experiences. At that time, the company indicated it was reassessing the future of LuckyLand Slots rather than committing to maintain both brands indefinitely.
Further signs of the brand's retirement were noted on the Malta Gaming Authority's licensing page, where the LuckyLand Slots URL was replaced with that of LuckyLand Casino. Additionally, VGW is preparing to launch a new platform called United Slots, for which a U.S. trademark application was filed in November 2025.
Although VGW initially aimed to launch United Slots in early 2026, the rollout has faced delays, but the website is currently operational, allowing player registration and showcasing a variety of slot games. Notably, this new platform was not mentioned in the email regarding the LuckyLand Slots closure.
The closure of LuckyLand Slots coincides with a significant period of change for VGW. Recently, founder Laurence Escalante stepped down as CEO and executive chairman, prompting the company to search for a new chief executive. Concurrently, VGW has been reducing its presence in the U.S. market due to increasing regulatory scrutiny of sweepstakes casinos. This month, the company exited Indiana and Maine due to legislative restrictions, now limiting operations in 16 U.S. jurisdictions compared to five at the end of 2024.
VGW is also facing legal challenges, including a lawsuit from Kentucky's Attorney General and a cease-and-desist order from Illinois regulators earlier this year. As the company adjusts its U.S. sweepstakes business, it has diversified into the social mobile gaming sector with the launch of Monopoly Match, a match-3 game.
While VGW has not publicly connected the closure of LuckyLand Slots to these developments, the decision aligns with the company's broader strategy to consolidate its product offerings amid a rapidly evolving regulatory environment for sweepstakes gaming.
