Turkey Targets Illegal Betting Payment Network in Major Crackdown

Turkish authorities have conducted a large-scale operation aimed at dismantling the financial and operational infrastructure behind illegal online betting platforms. The action, led by the Organised Crime Investigation Bureau of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, involved coordinated raids across 12 provinces and targeted individuals accused of facilitating services for nine betting websites.

Scope of the Operation

The investigation focused on a local network handling payments and daily operations for the betting sites. Suspects held roles in finance, payment processing, technical support, customer service, and management. Law enforcement executed searches at 32 locations, seizing digital materials such as server credentials and prepared scripts used by call-centre staff. Financial intelligence agency MASAK identified a total transaction volume of TRY 4.1 billion linked to the suspects' accounts from 2023 to 2026. Authorities blocked 505 bank accounts and 82 crypto asset accounts as part of the crackdown.

Details of the Network

The platforms identified in the investigation include Grandpashabet, Ramadabet, Merit Royalbet, Superbet, Maxwin, Asusbet, Venombet, Verabet, and Mersobahis. According to prosecutors, 30 individuals worked across various functions within the network serving these sites. The operation targeted the intermediary infrastructure that enabled the processing of customer funds, technical maintenance, and user communications for the illegal betting operations.

Changing Payment Methods and Regulatory Response

Authorities in Turkey have repeatedly found that illegal betting operations use a combination of bank accounts, electronic money services, and crypto assets to move funds. Bank accounts are typically the entry point, with funds later transferred through electronic money providers or converted into cryptocurrencies such as USDT. When existing payment routes are shut down, new intermediaries and methods quickly emerge, making enforcement a continual challenge. Regulators focus on tracking financial flows, cooperating with payment providers, and monitoring crypto transactions to disrupt these networks.

Why This Matters for the Industry

The crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts by regulators to disrupt the financial backbone of illegal betting platforms. For operators and affiliates working within legal frameworks, such enforcement actions are significant as they aim to channel players into regulated markets, supporting fair competition and consumer protection. Suppliers and payment providers are also affected, as increased scrutiny and monitoring can impact how financial services are offered to gambling-related businesses. The operation underscores the importance of compliance and robust payment monitoring in maintaining a legal and sustainable gambling environment.
