During a recent meeting at the White House, President Trump urged Congress to move forward with the stalled Clarity Act, aimed at regulating cryptocurrency. However, Amanda Fischer, the policy director at Better Markets, expressed skepticism about the bill's chances of success.
Fischer, who previously served as Chief of Staff at the SEC under the Biden Administration, believes that unresolved issues will hinder the bill's progress. She stated, “I don’t think they get to 60,” referring to the votes needed for cloture, citing numerous outstanding concerns that remain unaddressed.
Among the issues she highlighted are Trump’s involvement in cryptocurrency ventures, potential law enforcement challenges concerning decentralized markets, and traditional financial industry apprehensions regarding the integration of stock markets with blockchain technology. Additionally, community bankers have raised concerns that could impact the bill's viability.
Despite these challenges, CFTC Chairman Michael Selig indicated that the agency is prepared to implement the Clarity Act should it pass, emphasizing a commitment to advancing the President's pro-innovation agenda. However, Fischer cautioned that the current political landscape, marked by controversies surrounding Trump's business dealings and regulatory overreach, complicates collaboration among lawmakers.
Fischer also noted that there is growing hesitation among legislators regarding expanding the CFTC’s authority, questioning whether Selig's actions on prediction markets warrant additional power. She pointed out that many lawmakers are reconsidering the implications of giving more authority to an agency perceived as overstepping its bounds.
In a speech that followed, Selig addressed opponents of prediction markets, asserting that the era of regulatory enforcement is coming to an end and that a new financial landscape is emerging in the U.S.
