Offshore Operators Dominate French Gambling Searches in October Surge

Offshore gambling operators captured nearly 84% of French online gambling search interest during an early October surge, according to a recent analysis by Blask. The study compared two 14-day periods—September 7–20 and September 29–October 12—and found that daily search demand across the French gambling market more than doubled between these windows, with the highest activity recorded in early October.

Surge Linked to Social Unrest

The spike in gambling-related searches coincided with a wave of nationwide protests and public-sector unrest in France. Demonstrations began with school blockades in late September and continued into October. However, Blask noted that gambling search interest began to decline before additional protests later in the month, suggesting only a partial overlap between public events and increased gambling interest.

Offshore Brands See Major Gains

The most notable change during the period was the dramatic shift in search demand toward offshore operators. Offshore brands gained 16.4 percentage points, reaching 83.9% of the total Blask Index in the second period studied. Although licensed operators experienced a roughly 25% increase in absolute search demand, their activity remained below levels seen in August.

Two offshore brands, Leon and gtBet, were particularly prominent. Leon saw its daily Blask Index rise more than tenfold, while gtBet entered the French market data for the first time at the end of September. Even when excluding gtBet, overall offshore casino brand searches nearly doubled, indicating that the growth was broad-based and not limited to a few operators.

Regulatory Context and Market Dynamics

France's regulatory framework is a key factor behind the dominance of offshore operators. The Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) licenses online sports betting, horse racing, and poker, but online casino games remain prohibited. This restriction has led French consumers seeking online casino products to look beyond the regulated market, driving demand toward offshore brands.

Implications for Industry Stakeholders

The findings highlight a persistent challenge for French regulators and licensed operators: significant consumer demand for online casino products is being met by offshore entities. For affiliates and suppliers, the data points to a market where unlicensed operators continue to attract the majority of attention, even during periods of heightened interest. The trend suggests that without regulatory changes, licensed brands may struggle to capture a larger share of the growing online gambling market.
