At the SBC Summit in Lisbon, Michael Jordan shared his insights on sports betting, the unpredictability of games, and the mounting pressures faced by contemporary athletes.
Throughout his illustrious career, Jordan has been the subject of predictions—defenders speculated on his moves, while fans anticipated his scoring. Today, sportsbooks and data analytics firms have transformed these questions into betting opportunities.
During a keynote session titled “Leadership in Sports Business,” Jordan, a six-time NBA champion, joined Carsten Koerland, CEO of Sportradar, and Jason Robins, co-founder and CEO of DraftKings. The discussion, moderated by broadcaster Kirsty Gallacher, presented diverse viewpoints on the interplay between sports, technology, data, and gambling.
As the only participant with limited ties to the gambling sector, Jordan emphasized that athletes are primarily focused on winning, contrasting this with the industry's obsession with predicting outcomes. “I can’t worry about what people are betting on, I can’t worry about what the stats are,” Jordan remarked, reflecting on how he would navigate today’s data-driven sports environment. “All I care about is if we win. I care less who won the bets; I know I won the game.”
When Jordan entered the NBA in 1984, the league was a fraction of its current size, with revenues around $165 million and media rights valued at $28 million. Fast forward to 2026, and the NBA's annual revenue has soared to $14.3 billion, supported by a media rights deal worth $76 billion.
Even after retiring, Jordan remains a global icon, with his Air Jordan brand being a key element of his billionaire status. His investment portfolio extends beyond basketball, encompassing ventures like the Charlotte Hornets, Cincoro Tequila, DraftKings, Sportradar, and the 23XI NASCAR team.
Jordan noted that while he helped pave the way for athletes to build personal brands, during his time with the Chicago Bulls, commercial opportunities were not his priority. His focus was straightforward: to play basketball and secure victories.
At the SBC Summit, Gambling Insider reported on the keynote and also attended a side event for the launch of SOFTSWISS’ iGaming Trends 2027 report, which highlights the industry's evolution influenced by AI, regulation, and emerging markets. Jordan’s session provided a glimpse into the future of sports in this technological landscape.
