Maverick Washington LLC Warns of Potential Casino Closures

Maverick Washington LLC has informed state authorities that eight of its casinos may close as of November 30, resulting in the potential loss of 850 jobs. This announcement comes as the company navigates bankruptcy proceedings, leaving the door open for new operators to possibly take over these establishments.

The casinos at risk include the Great American Casino in Everett, All Star Casino in Silverdale, Casino Caribbean in Yakima, Crazy Moose Casino in Pasco, Coyote Bobs Casino in Kennewick, and three properties in Lakewood: Chip's Casino, Macau Casino, and Palace Casino, located at 8200 Tacoma Mall Blvd. and 9811 South Tacoma Way.

On September 28, Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters were sent to Washington's Employment Security Department, indicating that the closures could potentially be averted or delayed if there is a change in ownership or management.

Christine Wisniewski, Human Resources Director at Maverick Washington LLC, stated, “As we are currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, there is a possibility for a change in the operator or owner of the site. If a new owner or operator takes over, the planned closures may not happen, or they could be postponed.”

Some employees at the affected casinos are represented by Teamsters Local 117. Secretary-Treasurer Paul Dascher mentioned to The News Tribune that many of Maverick's operations have changed ownership during this process, and additional closures or transfers of ownership may occur in the coming months.

Dascher added, “Teamsters across Washington are working diligently to ensure that our members receive fair treatment during these challenging times.”

This latest notification follows an announcement of 238 planned layoffs at two card rooms in Tukwila. Earlier in September, Maverick Gaming revealed that the Great American Casino and Riverside Casino on Interurban Avenue S. would close, with layoffs set to begin on November 1.

Riverside Casino reported that 142 employees would be affected, while Great American Casino indicated 96 layoffs, impacting cashiers, bartenders, dealers, cooks, and management. Unlike the current situation, these earlier notices did not mention the possibility of avoiding closure through new ownership.

Maverick has also announced three rounds of layoffs over the summer, affecting 188 positions in SeaTac, Bothell, and Mountlake Terrace. Previous notifications involved properties in Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, and Seattle. Since April, the company has closed five locations.

In July 2025, Maverick Gaming filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Texas after a debt restructuring in 2024, reporting system-wide assets and liabilities ranging from $100 million to $500 million.

Chief Restructuring Officer Jeff Seery cited “significant competition from tribal casinos in Washington, operational misalignments, and industry challenges” as contributing factors to the bankruptcy.

This bankruptcy filing also led to the closure of Dragon Tiger Casino in Mountlake Terrace, Palace Casino in Lakewood, Silver Dollar in Renton, and Roman Casino in Seattle.

The Lakewood properties had been sold in sale-leaseback transactions in 2022 and 2023, and last year, Maverick announced plans to close Palace along with four other sites as part of its Chapter 11 filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Maverick Gaming stated on its website, “This decision follows the Washington Gaming Commissioners' choice to shut down the centralized surveillance petition that was designed to support Washington Cardrooms. The gaming board compared Washington cardroom casinos to larger casinos that attract more traffic, which has impacted our operations due to the lack of centralized and advanced surveillance technology.”
