The PGA Tour has imposed a six-month suspension on golfer Matt Gogel, a player on the PGA Tour Champions, following his involvement in multiple betting activities related to golf events scheduled for 2024 and 2025.
This announcement was made by the Tour on Wednesday, highlighting that Gogel's actions breached its integrity program, which strictly forbids any betting on PGA Tour events as well as other professional golf tournaments.
While the specific tournaments Gogel wagered on and the details of these bets were not revealed, the Tour confirmed that none of the bets pertained to events in which Gogel was a participant.
At 55 years old, Gogel's suspension will prevent him from competing in Tour-sanctioned events for the next six months, making him eligible to return in late February.
In a statement, Gogel expressed regret, stating, "In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA Tour policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf. I want to clarify that these wagers were not on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events, or any tournaments I participated in."
He further emphasized, "I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf," referring to the situation as "an honest mistake."
Gogel has one PGA Tour victory to his name, having won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 2002. The previous year, he achieved his best major championship result by finishing tied for 12th at the US Open.
Although he has been a consistent competitor on the PGA Tour Champions in recent years, he has not yet secured a win on this senior circuit. Last season, Gogel did not miss a cut and was the runner-up at the ISPS HANDA Senior Open held in July.
