In August 2026, hotels in Las Vegas reported their lowest room rates of the year, yet this price drop did not lead to an increase in bookings, as highlighted in a recent tourism report from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).
The city welcomed 3.03 million visitors during the month, marking a 4.3% decline compared to August 2025. This figure also fell short by 136,700 from July's total. Harry Reid International Airport noted a 9% decrease in passenger numbers compared to the same month last year.
The average daily rate (ADR) for hotel rooms in Las Vegas fell to $150.32, which is approximately $7 less than the previous month. Hotel occupancy rates dropped to 74.1%, a decrease of 3.4% from the same period in 2025. Weekend occupancy was higher at 85.5%, while midweek stays saw a decline to 69.4%.
Different areas of the city experienced varying results. Hotels on the Las Vegas Strip reported an ADR of $153.15 with an occupancy rate of 77.0%. In contrast, Downtown Las Vegas saw an average room rate of $85.68 and an occupancy level just above 50% at 53.0%.
Revenue per available room (RevPAR) also suffered, decreasing by 11.5% to $111.39, which is $10 lower than July's figures. The total number of occupied room nights fell by 3.7%, equating to 134,400 fewer nights, totaling 3,461,500.
Despite the downturn in tourism, casino revenues remained stable, with statewide gaming winnings in Nevada rising by 3.1% in August. However, the reduced visitor numbers have negatively impacted resorts that depend on high hotel occupancy.
On a positive note, convention attendance rose by 6.0% to 622,700, with events such as Def Con 2026 and the MAGIC Fall 2026 taking place during the month.
Domestic travelers were significantly affected by the drop in air traffic, experiencing a 10.2% decrease. Southwest Airlines, the primary carrier in Las Vegas, reported 1,745,124 passengers in August, down 4.6% from the previous year. Delta Air Lines also saw a decline of 8.8%, carrying 393,403 passengers compared to 431,151 last year.
Frontier Airlines has emerged as the second-largest carrier at Reid Airport, attracting passengers that previously flew with Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations in May. Frontier's passenger count surged by 35.3% to 436,475 from 322,571.
Among other major airlines, United Airlines transported 359,742 passengers, up 1.8%, while American Airlines carried 345,363, down 1.6% from the previous year.
Year-to-date statistics show that Southwest has carried 14,359,804 passengers, a slight decrease of 0.4% from 14,418,452. Frontier's total has increased by 19% to 3,012,670 from 2,532,313, while Delta's numbers fell by 3.6% to 3,405,729 from 3,531,109. United Airlines saw a 5.5% increase to 3,031,558 from 2,872,745, and American Airlines rose by 0.3% to 2,941,229 from 2,931,386.
Overall, passenger counts for both domestic and international flights have dropped by approximately 7% in the first eight months of 2026.
