A Las Vegas judge has sentenced Jiaying Chen to probation with a year in jail after she was convicted of bigamy and obtaining money under false pretenses, both felonies. The 34-year-old woman married multiple men to fund her gambling habit, with authorities reporting that she lost more than $300,000 at the Wynn casino over the past year. The sentencing took place on Tuesday in Clark County.
Pattern of Fraudulent Marriages
According to police and court records, Chen met men through social media, proposed marriage quickly, and then requested money under the pretense of helping a sick relative in China. Investigators found that Chen submitted 14 marriage applications, resulting in at least seven marriage certificates. She used aliases and fraudulent identification to conceal her actions, enabling her to remarry multiple times without detection.
Details of Sentencing and Restitution
District Judge Crystal Eller mandated that Chen serve the first year of her probation in jail, with credit for time already served, and attend Gamblers Anonymous meetings as well as counseling for gambling addiction. Chen was also ordered to pay $280,000 in restitution to her victims and will be subject to electronic monitoring. Prosecutors supported probation for Chen, citing that keeping her in the country would allow victims to pursue restitution.
Implications for the Gambling Industry
This case highlights the intersection of gambling addiction and fraud, underscoring the risks for both operators and regulators. For casino operators, it demonstrates the importance of monitoring for suspicious behavior and supporting responsible gambling initiatives. Regulators may see this as a call to strengthen identification and anti-fraud measures within marriage licensing and casino environments. The case also draws attention to the broader social consequences of gambling addiction, including financial harm to individuals and families.
