Steam has launched a new card roguelike titled Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, developed by the New Zealand indie studio Purple Moss Collectors and published by the British company Yogscast Games, as reported by iGN.
In this game, players navigate a tavern, challenging its patrons to modified blackjack matches in a quest to reach the tavern's owner. Both the hero and their opponents have health points; the loser of each hand loses health equal to the point difference, while exceeding 21 points results in damage equal to the opponent's total points.
Winning against each opponent rewards players with chips for in-game purchases and a card to add to their deck. Once the hero's health is depleted, the game restarts. The game was released on August 8, 2024, and received a major update, version 2.0, on July 30, 2026.
In addition to standard cards, the hero's deck can include tarot cards, business cards, and postcards, each with unique effects during play. There are over 300 cards in total. The suits dictate gameplay style: hearts restore health, spades provide defense, diamonds yield chips, and clubs enhance damage. Between battles, players can engage in mini-games, including a slot machine and trading in-game cryptocurrency at fluctuating rates, facing off against 60 opponents.
Update 2.0 introduced four new tavern floors, over 50 talismans with permanent effects, and a daily challenge. On September 17, the developer also announced plans to release the game on consoles. The game was solely developed by studio founder Michael Davis, who drew inspiration from the British TV show Taskmaster, where participants had to memorize the order of unusual cards in a deck. According to the publisher, the game generated over $1 million in sales during its first month. Priced at $14.99, it currently holds a very positive rating with 3,009 user reviews. Note that there are no options for real money betting in the game.
