Brazil's Finance Minister, Dario Durigan, has emphasized the need for enhanced oversight of betting companies, asserting that the industry's growth necessitates more robust regulations, increased taxation, and stricter advertising restrictions.
In a recent interview with UOL News, Durigan expressed that the rapid expansion of betting firms has raised significant concerns for the government. He believes that gambling should be regulated similarly to products that pose social and economic risks.
“We ought to treat gambling like we do cigarettes. It’s detrimental to health and financially burdensome for Brazilians, so we must enforce stricter regulations,” he stated during the interview.
His remarks follow President Lula's earlier support for a ban on betting activities. Durigan acknowledged shared concerns regarding the sector but cautioned that an outright ban could push gambling operations into illegal markets.
The minister clarified that the government aims to regulate the betting industry, noting that these companies have integrated into Brazil's economy and should thus contribute through taxes.
He also stressed that operators must comply with local laws before entering the Brazilian market. “It’s insufficient for these firms to come into the country without adhering to Brazilian regulations,” he remarked.
Durigan pointed out that certain sectors of the economy have become reliant on betting companies, highlighting that previous governments had granted the industry considerable importance in the national economy. He indicated that the current administration is focused on tightening oversight to ensure regulations are stringent enough to curb the growth of illegal gambling.
The finance minister asserted that the government must adopt a “very tough” stance on regulating betting companies. He linked this approach to the necessity of enhancing controls, increasing taxation, and limiting advertising to manage the sector's growth in Brazil.
Additionally, Durigan addressed concerns regarding transparency after a Freedom of Information Act request for betting company data was denied. He explained that the refusal was due to the personal data required to fulfill the request, not an intention to conceal information about the industry.
“There is no secrecy whatsoever,” Durigan stated regarding the sector's regulation.
He mentioned that the government has requested assistance from the CGU, the Comptroller General of the Union, to facilitate a review of cases that have already been processed and to proactively disclose data, rather than only responding to individual requests.
