The Arizona Department of Gaming has announced that it will reopen the application period for event wagering licenses from June 26 to July 10. This opportunity arises periodically as licenses become available, with the last application window having taken place in 2024.
When legal sports betting commenced in Arizona in 2021, the state granted 20 event wagering licenses. Of these, 10 are allocated for operators collaborating with Arizona tribes, while the other 10 are reserved for those associated with professional sports teams in the region.
Cliff Holden, the Assistant Director of Certification and Licensing at the Department of Gaming, emphasized the agency's commitment to consumer protection and a comprehensive licensing review process. He stated, “We look forward to receiving new applications for regulated event wagering.”
Currently, there are 14 active event wagering licensees in Arizona, following the exit of several operators due to a wave of industry consolidation. Notable sportsbooks such as Betfred, SuperBook Sports, Betway, Fubo Sportsbook, TwinSpires, Unibet, and WynnBet have ceased operations in the state, alongside similar closures in other U.S. markets. SaharaBets also shut down after losing its partnership with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes when they relocated to Utah.
The Arizona sports betting market is dominated by major players like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365, and Fanatics. However, the landscape is becoming increasingly competitive with the rise of prediction markets, which could pose challenges for new entrants.
Since the legalization of sports wagering, Arizona bettors have placed approximately $33.9 billion in bets, resulting in nearly $179.9 million in state revenue. In 2025, Arizona’s sports betting revenue alone exceeded $713 million, marking it as the sixth-largest sports betting market in the United States.
