A court in São Paulo, Brazil, has mandated that the betting operator bet365 pay a player his winnings from bets placed on assists in two matches of the Italian Serie A. This decision was reported by the plaintiff's lawyer, Bruno Rodrigues, on his X profile.
Initially, bet365 classified these bets as losses, disputing the controversial episodes as assists. This was despite the player providing official match protocols and video recordings of the moments in question.
In its defense, bet365 referred to data from the sports statistics provider Opta, which classified the disputed episodes as not qualifying as assists. However, the court noted that the issue was not with Opta's data itself, but rather with the lack of technical justification for the criteria applied. Merely citing the provider's classification was insufficient.
The court emphasized that the operator must objectively explain why a specific episode does not meet the criteria for an assist. As bet365 failed to provide such justifications, the court ruled that the service was rendered improperly.
