NBA Partners with PrizePicks Amid Gambling Integrity Concerns

The NBA's recent collaboration with PrizePicks underscores a growing conflict regarding the league's commercial strategies.

PrizePicks has officially become the NBA’s Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) Partner. This multi-year agreement, announced this week, allows the Atlanta-based firm to incorporate the NBA’s intellectual property into its DFS and free-to-play offerings, along with the use of league and team trademarks.

In addition, PrizePicks has reached a separate arrangement with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) to utilize player images in its promotional content.

While this announcement follows the typical format for contemporary sports partnerships, the NBA is currently facing scrutiny over how it balances commercial gains with integrity issues that have made headlines in the past year and a half.

PrizePicks has built its business around a pick’em format, enabling users to predict whether two to six players will exceed or fall short of specific statistical benchmarks. Critics, along with state gambling regulators, argue that this model resembles player prop parlays offered by licensed sportsbooks.

In February 2024, the company agreed to cease its paid contests in New York and paid nearly $15 million to the New York State Gaming Commission after it was found to have operated without a state wagering license since June 2019. Other states, including Florida, have also challenged or limited similar offerings.

California's Attorney General Rob Bonta has stated that DFS constitutes sports betting and is thus illegal in the state.

PrizePicks obtained a fantasy sports license in New York in late 2025 and re-entered the market in February 2026 with a peer-to-peer format as part of its revised offerings.

Moreover, PrizePicks has ventured into the prediction market arena, now providing sports event contracts through PrizePicks Predict. Users can seamlessly switch between the DFS product and the prediction market with just one click.

Notably, the announcement regarding the PrizePicks/NBA partnership makes no reference to prediction markets.

Unlike other major leagues, the NBA has so far refrained from entering into agreements with prediction market platforms. The NHL partnered with Polymarket and Kalshi in October, while the MLB announced a deal with Polymarket last month, reportedly valued between $150 million and $300 million over a three-year period.

While the specific terms of the partnership remain undisclosed, the financial context indicates that this is a substantial agreement.

In September 2025, PrizePicks revealed that European lottery operator Allwyn had agreed to acquire a 62.3% stake in the company for approximately $1.6 billion, which values the company at $2.5 billion, with a potential valuation reaching $4.15 billion based on certain performance metrics.

The transaction was finalized in January, and Allwyn's announcement estimated PrizePicks’ EBITDA at $339 million for the 12 months ending June 2025. Analysts from Citizens Bank noted that this performance positioned PrizePicks as the third-largest U.S. gambling company by profitability.

The commercial rationale behind the new agreement is evident, but the surrounding context is more intricate. The NBA finalized this deal roughly five months after its most significant gambling scandal.

On October 23, 2025, federal prosecutors announced charges against 34 individuals, including Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, former player and coach Damon Jones, and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, related to alleged illegal sports betting and rigged poker games.

The indictment outlined at least seven NBA games between February 2023 and March 2024 where insiders purportedly disclosed confidential information, such as injury statuses, to enable bettors to profit unlawfully.

This case traces back to Jontay Porter, who played for the Toronto Raptors before receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA in April 2024 for agreeing to leave games early, allowing bettors to win their prop bets.
