On July 8, the Supreme Court of British Columbia dismissed Timothy Jones' lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend, Cheryl Johnson, seeking $80,100 from her winnings of $84,200. This amount was won on April 13, 2022, through slots on her account at the online casino JackpotCity, which is unlicensed in British Columbia, though this did not affect the court's decision.
The court ruled that the winnings remain with Johnson, as Jones played without her permission on her account, using her laptop and her deposited funds of $57.
Judge also rejected Jones' argument that his strategy led to the winnings, stating that there can be no strategy in a game of chance. Johnson's side claimed that her 16-year-old son played during the winning bonus round; however, the court determined that the teenager was merely sitting in front of the screen while Jones was the one actually playing.
Of the total winnings, Johnson only gave Jones $3,700 and her son $285, as she claimed she was trying to end their relationship. It was the remaining $80,100 that Jones sought in court.
