Sports betting platforms have traditionally relied on basic odds and statistics, often lacking the context needed for users to make informed decisions. However, this trend is shifting as operators seek to present information in more relevant and timely ways without complicating the user experience.
Hard Rock Digital is among the latest to embrace this change with its new AI Insights feature. In an exclusive interview with Yogonet, Mitch Mitchell, the Senior Vice President of Data, AI, and Predictive Analytics, elaborated on the development and functionality of this feature, as well as its implications for the future of sports betting products.
AI Insights has been integrated as an additional layer within the Hard Rock Bet sportsbook experience. According to Mitchell, the goal was to address the lack of narrative context that often accompanies sports statistics. “We wanted to unlock the engaging stories behind the teams and events that players care about,” he stated.
The feature utilizes AI's flexibility and data grounding to connect raw market data with compelling narratives, ensuring a seamless experience for users.
Mitchell emphasized that AI Insights goes beyond mere statistics by providing contextual narratives around games. To maintain accuracy and usefulness, every insight is linked to reliable source data, significantly minimizing the risk of errors. Additionally, a team of experts reviews the information presented, including injury updates and team momentum, to ensure its relevance and accuracy.
Personalization is a key component of AI Insights, with insights tailored to users' favorite teams and leagues. Mitchell explained that players typically open the app to accomplish specific tasks rather than to browse through endless content. “Personalization is about presenting the right insight for the right event at the right time,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of relevance without overwhelming the user.
The feature currently supports NBA, NHL, and soccer, with the selection of sports and leagues driven by the quality of insights and player demand. Mitchell pointed out that sports with rich data ecosystems were prioritized initially, but there is also value in exploring less mainstream sports where compelling narratives exist. “We’ve even tested insights in table tennis, revealing amazing storylines that might have gone unnoticed,” he shared.
As AI continues to gain traction in the industry, Mitchell highlighted that AI Insights aligns with Hard Rock Digital’s long-term strategy regarding data, predictive analytics, and user engagement. “AI should serve the customer, not the other way around,” he asserted, cautioning against treating AI as merely a standalone feature. The focus should always be on enhancing the player experience.
