DraftKings is set to modify its DK Replay product in Oregon following talks with the Oregon Lottery, which has prompted changes aimed at enhancing pacing and promoting responsible gaming. These adjustments are expected to roll out next week.
In a communication to Gambling Insider, Melanie Mesaros, the Oregon Lottery's External Communications Program Manager, noted that both the regulator and DraftKings have agreed to make DK Replay more closely mimic the tempo of a live baseball game. Additionally, they will introduce responsible gaming prompts at regular intervals during gameplay.
DK Replay is a unique sports betting platform that allows users to place bets on historical MLB games, presenting at-bats in a sequential manner to create a live game atmosphere. Unlike traditional betting systems that utilize random number generators, DK Replay operates from a database of past events, revealing outcomes pitch by pitch.
Users can place their bets before each pitch, simulating the experience of live in-game betting. The Oregon Lottery has clarified that all betting markets remain anonymized at the time of wagering, ensuring that users are unaware of the outcomes, even though the events are predetermined.
Mesaros emphasized that DK Replay pulls from a vast queue of previously offered betting markets on the DraftKings Sportsbook, distinguishing it from casino-style games that rely on random outcomes. Instead, DK Replay is directly linked to real sporting events, complete with integrity monitoring.
Despite the necessary adjustments, the Oregon Lottery maintains that DK Replay falls within the authorized offerings of DraftKings. Mesaros stated, “We believe this wagering opportunity is within what DK is currently authorized to provide within our sports betting product.”
Furthermore, as part of the agreed modifications, DK Replay will feature additional responsible gaming prompts during gameplay. Existing DraftKings tools, such as activity tracking and limit-setting features, will also apply to this product. Mesaros reassured that all DK Replay markets remain fully transparent and subject to oversight by the Oregon Lottery.
