Annise Parker Advocates Casino Gaming to Save Historic Astrodome

Annise Parker, the former mayor of Houston and a candidate for Harris County judge, has proposed that casino gaming could provide a sustainable solution for the preservation of the historic Astrodome. She suggested that billionaire Tilman Fertitta could convert the iconic structure into a large casino complex, provided that Texas legalizes gambling.

During a recent event organized by the Houston Association of Black Journalists, Parker emphasized that private investments associated with casino development could rescue the long-neglected stadium from demolition or further decline. She stated, "Tilman Fertitta would put the world’s biggest casino in there in a heartbeat, and then we could save the Astrodome and not worry about it," according to reports from The Houston Chronicle.

Parker also highlighted the political landscape in Texas as a significant obstacle to gambling expansion, noting that shifts in state leadership could influence the viability of casino legislation. She specifically mentioned Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who has historically opposed efforts to expand gambling and oversees the Texas Senate’s legislative agenda.

Fertitta, the owner of the Houston Rockets and operator of the Golden Nugget casino chain, is viewed as a key figure in the potential Texas gaming market. He is reportedly in exclusive negotiations to acquire Caesars Entertainment, which could further enhance his influence in the gaming industry.

Additionally, Fertitta has been involved in various sports and entertainment investments in the Houston area, including initiatives aimed at relocating a WNBA franchise to the city.

The Astrodome, once a prominent venue for sports and entertainment, has been closed since 2009 and lacks a clear plan for redevelopment. With about one million square feet of space, it is considerably larger than existing major casino resorts, such as the WinStar World Casino & Resort, recognized as the largest gaming facility globally.

Over the years, various redevelopment proposals for the Astrodome have emerged, including transforming it into a hotel, convention center, entertainment hub, museum, disaster relief center, or even demolishing it altogether.

There have been previous speculations that if Texas grants multiple casino licenses, Fertitta might seek to establish a gaming venue in Galveston, where he owns the San Luis Resort, Spa & Conference Center.
