VGW CEO Laurence Escalante Resigns Amid Regulatory Challenges

Laurence Escalante, the founder of VGW, a leading sweepstakes casino operator, has stepped down from his roles as CEO and Executive Chairman following a six-month leave of absence. His resignation comes as the company grapples with increasing regulatory scrutiny in the United States.

Escalante's departure is effective immediately. He had been on leave since January after being charged by Western Australia Police with multiple offenses related to family violence and drug use.

VGW, which operates popular platforms such as Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots, and Global Poker, stated that the charges against Escalante are personal and do not pertain to the company’s operations. Mats Johnson, who is currently serving as Acting CEO, will continue to lead the company while a search for a permanent CEO is underway.

In his statement, Escalante mentioned that he is resigning to focus on personal matters, including his business interests and philanthropic efforts through his family office.

Johnson praised Escalante for his role in establishing VGW 16 years ago, transforming it from a small idea in Perth into one of Australia’s largest unlisted companies and a notable success story abroad. He credited Escalante with being a pioneer of the social gaming model that has gained significant traction in the U.S. market.

This resignation follows serious legal troubles for Escalante, who was charged in January with family violence and drug-related offenses. The allegations include persistent family violence, property damage, theft, and possession of illegal substances with intent to distribute. Escalante has denied these allegations.

His resignation comes shortly after he completed the privatization of VGW, which was approved by shareholders in August 2025. This deal valued the company at approximately A$3.2 billion (around $2.3 billion) and was intended to enhance the company’s ability to manage increasing regulatory and competitive pressures, particularly in the U.S.

VGW has experienced significant financial success, reporting A$7.3 billion ($5.2 billion) in revenue for the year ending June 30, 2025, with a profit increase of 33.5% year-on-year. Chumba Casino was the standout brand, contributing A$5.2 billion to the revenue.

As VGW navigates these challenges, it remains a leader in the sweepstakes casino sector, despite facing mounting regulatory pressures from various states, including Indiana, Maine, and Tennessee. The Kentucky Attorney General has also filed a lawsuit against VGW, alleging illegal gambling operations in the state.

Despite these hurdles, VGW's brands, particularly Chumba Casino and LuckyLand Slots, continue to dominate the U.S. sweepstakes market, accounting for a significant portion of the demand.
