The National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK has frozen $13.4 million in an account belonging to the English Premier League as part of an investigation into unlicensed gambling activities involving the crypto gaming company Sorare, according to reports from The Sun.
In 2023, Sorare signed a four-year agreement worth $161 million with the league. The product offered by Sorare is a fantasy football game that utilizes NFT cards featuring football players. Notable ambassadors and investors for the company include Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.
According to the publication, the NCA received a freeze order from the Westminster Magistrates' Court back in January 2025, based on the Proceeds of Crime Act. Sorare denies any wrongdoing, and amidst the investigation, the league has terminated its agreement following the conclusion of the last season.
