A 38-year-old cashier-controller in Grodno, Belarus, has been sentenced to three years in a general regime colony after stealing $62,000 from the store's safe. This theft was motivated by her mounting debts and significant losses in online casinos.
The Lenin District Court found that the thefts escalated over time, with the amounts taken ranging from $37 to $1,500. The cashier had initially planned to win back the stolen money and return it to the cash register. However, after failing to do so, she confessed to the store management.
In addition to her prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of 50 basic units, equivalent to $824, and prohibited her from holding positions related to the accounting, storage, and management of material assets for three years.
