Texas Tech QB Sorsby Denied Reinstatement by NCAA Amid Appeals

The NCAA has ruled that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is permanently ineligible due to gambling violations. This decision comes after Sorsby completed treatment for his gambling addiction and publicly discussed his recovery journey.

His request for reinstatement for the 2026 college football season was denied, stemming from bets he placed on Indiana football games during his time with the Hoosiers in 2022. In response, Sorsby has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, seeking a temporary injunction to allow him to play in the upcoming season.

In a statement shared on social media, Sorsby expressed his feelings of newfound freedom from addiction, acknowledging the challenges ahead. He conveyed remorse for disappointing others and emphasized his commitment to recovery, stating, “With the support of my coaches, teammates, and the university, I’m looking forward to returning to campus in Lubbock.”

Texas Tech’s President, Lawrence Schovanec, has publicly supported Sorsby, announcing the university's intention to appeal the NCAA's ruling. In a letter to the Texas Tech community, he highlighted the importance of addressing addiction recovery and mental health, arguing that the NCAA's current regulations do not align with the realities of legalized sports betting.

Schovanec also outlined a comprehensive recovery plan for Sorsby, which includes outpatient care, therapy, and monitoring measures to prevent future gambling issues. He believes that Sorsby’s openness about his struggles should be met with institutional support.
