An investigation is underway in Australia regarding the circumstances surrounding the suicide of 22-year-old Kyle Hudson from Melbourne, who took his life in 2021. The inquiry is examining the role of iGaming operators Sportsbet, Bet365, and Ladbrokes (Entain) in his gambling addiction.
According to forensic analysis, Hudson placed 8,485 bets from 2017 to 2021, totaling a turnover of $648,000, with a net loss of $34,000. Over the four years, he received 489 promotional offers, including over 300 from Sportsbet and 72 from Bet365.
Hudson frequently paused his betting activities but returned after receiving promotional offers that included deposit doubling. Testimonies during hearings revealed that Sportsbet contacted him 37 times following internal system triggers, yet deemed that no additional measures were necessary.
Moreover, Hudson set self-imposed restrictions on his gambling account seven times, only to lift them each time. The investigation raises the question of why Sportsbet did not recognize Hudson's behavior as a warning signal.
