The iGaming market in Portugal has shown significant growth, with the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reaching €328.2 million in the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest quarterly report from the SRIJ regulator.
Key highlights from the report include:
- Overall GGR: €328.2 million, marking a 14.4% year-on-year increase.
- Online Casino GGR: €203.1 million, up 14.2% YoY.
- Betting GGR: €125.1 million, a rise of 14.6% YoY.
- Tax Revenues: €92.1 million, increasing by 13.4% YoY.
In terms of turnover, the online casino sector reported €5.69 billion, reflecting a 13% increase year-on-year, while betting turnover reached €515.6 million, up 12.7% YoY. Notably, slots accounted for 81.6% of the online casino turnover, and football represented 69.9% of betting turnover.
The audience metrics reveal:
- Total Player Registrations: 4.91 million, a 1% increase YoY.
- Active Registrations in Q2: 1.21 million, up 8.4% YoY.
- New Registrations in Q2: 248.4 thousand, a 17.7% increase YoY.
- Cancelled Registrations in Q2: 244.9 thousand.
As for the player demographics, 93.6% of registrations were Portuguese, with 76.5% of players under 45 years old. Among new registrations, 36.2% were aged 18-24.
At the end of Q2, there were 17 operators active in the market, holding a total of 30 licenses (17 for online casinos, 12 for betting, and 1 for bingo). The regulator issued 95 notices to cease operations to illegal operators, 113 requests to block websites to internet service providers, and 6 referrals to the prosecutor's office. Interestingly, the share of online casinos in GGR decreased for the first time in five reporting Q2s, dropping from 62% in 2025 to 61.9% in 2026.
It is important to note that the report's data remains preliminary until the end of the financial year, with the regulator allowing for adjustments in future quarterly reports.
