A Washington D.C. public relations agency, Global Situation Room (GSR), has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Polymarket regarding its upcoming pop-up bar named "The Situation Room." This action followed Polymarket's announcement of the bar's launch.
The letter, dated March 19 and acquired by Gambling Insider, was penned by GSR's consulting attorney, Shane Delsman. It asserts that the name of the bar infringes on GSR's trademark and creates a misleading association between GSR and Polymarket's offerings.
Delsman highlighted the similarities between the two names, noting that both contain the phrase “Situation Room” and serve as platforms for monitoring global events. He mentioned that GSR has already experienced confusion, as media outlets have reached out for comments regarding the new bar.
GSR's letter demands that Polymarket halt all usage of the name “The Situation Room” and refrain from using it in any promotional materials. Polymarket was given until the end of the day on March 19 to comply or risk further legal action.
GSR CEO Brett Bruen informed Gambling Insider that the firm is ready to explore all legal avenues to safeguard its intellectual property. He noted that Polymarket had sought a meeting with GSR's legal team but has not followed up, which he found unusual. Bruen expressed concern that Polymarket's actions might indicate a lack of thorough research and a desire for publicity.
He emphasized that the terminology used by Polymarket closely resembles GSR’s branding as a PR firm, which could negatively impact GSR's established reputation. Bruen also recounted the challenges GSR faced in securing its trademark, which included overcoming initial objections from trademark offices regarding the term's military connotations.
