Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head First Nation Reveals Casino Plans

The Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man (MGBHLM) First Nation has shared exciting new information regarding its ambitious $100 million casino and resort project during a recent update at the Ridge Interpretive Centre in Battlefords, Saskatchewan.

This initiative, supported by a $60 million investment from the First Nation, aims to relocate and modernize the existing Gold Eagle Casino, along with its hotel and convention center.

Phase 1 of the project has garnered full backing from the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), allowing the MGBHLM Casino and Resorts Limited Partnership to move forward with planning and engaging the community.

Future plans for a second phase are anticipated to introduce further amenities, which will include entertainment and cultural facilities.

Chief Tanya Stone hailed the project as a significant achievement for both the First Nation and the wider region. She stated, “This project represents years of vision, planning, and commitment from our leadership and community. We are thankful for the ongoing support from our elders, leadership, BATC, FSIN, and our partners at SIGA, the City of North Battleford, Indigenous Services Canada, and the province.”

Stone emphasized that this development is more than just a facility; it is a long-term investment in the community's people, economy, and future. “We are creating something that will provide opportunities and lasting benefits for generations,” she added.

Community input has been vital in shaping the development. In early April, elders participated in workshops where they encouraged designs that reflect local culture and environment, advocating for the use of natural materials, more natural light, and spaces honoring past leaders and showcasing historical artifacts. They also stressed the importance of incorporating Cree and Nakota languages into the facility.

This development aligns with broader economic objectives, creating opportunities not just for the MGBHLM First Nation, but also for the City of North Battleford, neighboring First Nations, and the province as a whole.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron described the project as a pivotal step for Indigenous economic growth in Saskatchewan, highlighting its potential to create jobs and provide long-term economic benefits. “SIGA’s continued leadership in the gaming sector has made a modern facility in North Battleford essential,” he remarked. “We commend the Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation for its leadership and collaboration with the Host Tribal Council and the local community.”

Officials from SIGA also expressed strong support for the project. Board Chair Chief Tammy Cook-Searson noted that the initiative aligns with the organization’s mission to generate jobs and revenue for First Nations communities. “The relocation and revitalization of Gold Eagle Casino in partnership with MGBHLM First Nation directly addresses that mission,” she stated. “SIGA is fully dedicated to supporting MGBHLM as they advance this project, and we eagerly anticipate the unique facility, which will continue the tradition of our other SIGA casinos in providing world-class First Nation hospitality and becoming a premier entertainment destination in the province.”

Meanwhile, SIGA President and CEO Zane Hansen highlighted the project’s potential to turn the region into a significant tourism hub. “With hundreds of construction jobs and long-term positions expected, along with the potential for over half a million visitors annually, this development will have a transformative economic impact on North Battleford and the surrounding area,” he said.

The First Nation is currently finalizing a land acquisition agreement with the City of North Battleford for a site along Highway 16 West, south of the Riverview Community, where the new development is set to be established.

Construction for Phase 1 is projected to create around 350 jobs, with an estimated 400 permanent positions once the facility becomes operational. The project is also expected to generate millions in annual tourism revenue for the region.
