Ontario Launches BetGuard: A New Self-Exclusion Tool

iGaming Ontario has introduced BetGuard, a centralized platform designed for self-exclusion that enables residents of Ontario to restrict their access to all licensed online gambling sites within the province.

This service is accessible to individuals aged 19 and above and can be utilized without the need to visit specific gambling websites. After users register with valid identification, they are automatically barred from all regulated operators, including the Proline platform managed by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

Participants can select exclusion durations of six months, one year, five years, or a personalized timeframe. While users can renew or extend their exclusion, they are unable to shorten or cancel it once it is in effect.

The launch of BetGuard coincides with the rapid growth of Ontario’s regulated iGaming sector, which currently boasts 44 licensed operators and 76 gaming websites, projected to generate over $4 billion in revenue by 2025.

Joseph Hillier, President and CEO of iGaming Ontario, stated, “As the regulated market expands, so does our responsibility, particularly towards vulnerable populations who may struggle to maintain a healthy balance in their gambling habits.”

Hillier pointed out that Ontario is one of the few regions offering a centralized self-exclusion system designed for the modern digital gambling landscape. He characterized the platform as “simple, secure, and effective,” highlighting that participation is entirely voluntary.

Since taking the helm of iGaming Ontario in late 2025, Hillier has prioritized the balance between industry growth and responsible gambling initiatives. He mentioned that iGaming Ontario is exploring other jurisdictions for effective responsible gambling strategies to implement in Ontario.

Paul Burns, President and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association, remarked on the success of the marketplace, attributing it to a competitive environment that fosters innovation while adhering to responsible gambling standards. He emphasized that operators are continually encouraged to integrate responsible gambling practices into their core operations.

According to Burns, Ontario operators have largely embraced this approach, reflecting the existing regulatory framework and iGO’s commitment to prioritizing responsible gambling. He also noted the ongoing necessity for education, with industry stakeholders bearing the responsibility to ensure the public comprehends the product and its responsible use.
