The recent collaboration between the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and Kalshi has sparked discussions in the financial services sector. This partnership aims to introduce a new membership category specifically for financial services and trading.
The debate surrounding whether prediction markets, especially those resembling sports betting contracts, constitute gambling remains unresolved. Amidst the legal complexities stemming from this uncertainty, the NCPG and Kalshi have announced a strategic initiative worth $2 million over two years to promote trader health and safety.
To facilitate this initiative, the NCPG has established a new subcategory called Financial Services & Trading. According to the announcement, this new vertical will work towards enhancing education and awareness regarding responsible trading by developing practical and data-driven resources.
Kalshi's spokesperson, Elisabeth Diana, emphasized the company's commitment to addressing risks associated with financial products. She stated, “We aim to lead the industry in mitigating those risks, and education plays a significant role in that effort.”
Furthermore, NCPG’s director of policy and partnerships, Cole Wogoman, mentioned that the organization will conduct a needs assessment to better understand the requirements of prediction market users. This assessment is intended to identify gaps in existing resources and ensure effective communication with those who may benefit from assistance.
Wogoman highlighted the importance of making the National Problem Gambling Helpline more accessible to individuals involved in prediction markets, suggesting that terminology could be adjusted to resonate better with this audience.
Although Kalshi has not yet integrated the helpline into its responsible trading framework, the NCPG is hopeful that such resources will be adopted in the future.
