Jimmy Vaccaro's Legacy Captured in Upcoming Documentary

Jimmy Vaccaro, a prominent figure in the sports betting industry, is the subject of a new 74-minute documentary detailing his remarkable 50-year career.

Having witnessed countless personalities pass through his Las Vegas sportsbooks, including the Barbary Coast, Mirage, and South Point, Vaccaro has engaged with thousands of individuals. His reputation as America’s most recognized and approachable oddsmaker grew significantly, especially after the legalization of sports betting in 2018.

Throughout his career, Vaccaro has heard many promises and boasts, but not all were fulfilled. When filmmaker Frank Zarrillo approached him in August 2024, just a year before Vaccaro's retirement, he was initially skeptical about the seriousness of the documentary project. However, as the film neared completion in February, Vaccaro acknowledged the importance of Zarrillo’s commitment.

Zarrillo recounted a memorable moment from a Super Bowl visit to South Point, where Vaccaro expressed his appreciation for Zarrillo's dedication, contrasting it with others who had failed to follow through on their promises.

As Zarrillo seeks distribution in collaboration with Richard Paraiso and Linda Bose from the Empire Agency, he reflects on the respect he garnered from Vaccaro, who has also dedicated years to the industry.

During their collaboration, Zarrillo and Vaccaro developed a rapport, though the depth of their friendship is subjective. Zarrillo aimed to authentically portray Vaccaro’s story, stating, “When you’re done with it just let me know. I want to watch it too.”

Zarrillo's filmmaking journey has primarily focused on athletes, but his connection with Vaccaro began after a private screening at South Point for a documentary about poker player Mike Matusow, who appears in the new film. Chris Andrews, the sportsbook director at South Point and a long-time friend of Vaccaro, encouraged Zarrillo to meet Vaccaro, leading to a swift progression in their project.

As filming commenced, Zarrillo received support from Vaccaro’s brother, Sonny, who offered assistance and expressed admiration for the project. Zarrillo, who grew up in New Jersey and frequented Atlantic City, noted that he did not gamble during the filming process, allowing him to approach the subject without preconceived notions.

“I get a front row seat, and I get an education, too, walking into an industry,” Zarrillo remarked, highlighting the unique opportunity to learn from the veterans of the sports betting world.
