Construction has officially started on the long-awaited casino and entertainment complex in Marousi, a suburb in northern Athens. Local media reports indicate that cranes are already active at the site, which is located next to the Athens Olympic complex (OAKA), with material deliveries occurring at a rapid pace.
This development involves relocating the only operational casino serving the greater Athens-Piraeus area from Mount Parnitha to Marousi. The proposal for this relocation faced years of political, legal, and urban planning discussions before finally moving into the construction phase.
The project has garnered significant attention in the Greek capital, particularly due to its proximity to OAKA and two well-established shopping centers in the vicinity.
Proponents of the initiative argue that it will generate employment opportunities and attract investments to the local area.
However, opposition groups, including some residents and nearby municipal authorities, have raised concerns regarding potential traffic congestion, environmental impacts, and the alteration of Marousi's character.
In 2025, Greece’s Council of State approved Presidential Decree 36/2023, paving the way for the €300 million ($332 million) VORIA project by North Star Entertainment in Marousi. This mixed-use complex will feature a five-star hotel, a conference center, a casino, entertainment venues, and dining options, alongside the relocation of the Mont Parnes casino to an 8,500-square-meter facility on the site.
Additionally, the Greek government granted a three-year extension for the Mont Parnes casino's relocation from Parnitha National Park to Marousi, pushing the completion deadline to May 1, 2028, due to delays related to regulatory and administrative processes. This decision pertains to the casino operated by Hellenic Casino of Parnitha S.A. (EKPA S.A.), under provisions established in 2018.
