Matt Schuler Announces Retirement from Ohio Casino Control Commission

Last week, the atmosphere outside the conference room at the Charles D. Shipley Building in Columbus was filled with a mix of anticipation and warmth as attendees awaited the conclusion of an executive session held by the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC).

Among the crowd, Matt Schuler, the OCCC's inaugural executive director, stood out. This meeting marked his final appearance in that role, as he is set to retire at the end of the month. Andromeda Morrison, the current deputy executive director and general counsel, will take over as interim director starting June 1.

The meeting primarily focused on honoring Schuler for his contributions. While some mingled, others prepared refreshments for a celebratory gathering afterward. Throughout the event, Schuler appeared relieved, seemingly glad to leave behind discussions about various industry matters.

In a virtual interview with Gambling Insider following the meeting, Schuler expressed his satisfaction with the commission's progress. He remarked, “If I seem happy, it’s because the commission is doing exactly what it should be doing, ensuring a smooth transition with a capable team that will continue to excel, regardless of my presence.”

During the interview, Schuler elaborated on his retirement decision, reflecting on his nearly 15 years at the commission and his previous experience in the Ohio Senate. He noted that he had contemplated whether to continue in his role or to step aside for new leadership.

“I believe we are all temporary stewards in our positions,” Schuler stated. “It felt like the right moment for fresh leadership and for the team to expand its responsibilities and talents.”

He acknowledged that the decision was not easy, as he had never held a job for this duration before. However, he felt confident that the team at the commission would thrive in his absence.

When asked if the upcoming gubernatorial election influenced his decision, Schuler clarified that it did not. He emphasized his positive experiences working with leaders across the political spectrum and expressed pride in the commission's achievements since its inception in 2011.
