Massachusetts Launches PlayWell for Responsible Gaming

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has introduced PlayWell, a new initiative aimed at promoting responsible gaming and player health, which replaces the previous GameSense program.

This launch represents a major advancement in the commission's ongoing commitment to enhance player welfare and responsible gambling practices throughout the state, a mission that has spanned over ten years. The PlayWell branding will be prominently displayed at casinos and on sports betting platforms across Massachusetts.

PlayWell is designed to be easily accessible, providing resources for players both in-person, online, and via telephone, ensuring they remain informed and can effectively manage their gambling habits.

According to Massachusetts law, the MGC must operate a responsible gaming program that is available at all licensed casinos. PlayWell is entirely owned by the commission, with its administration overseen by the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health.

MGC Chair Jordan Maynard emphasized the importance of establishing a comprehensive research and responsible gaming program when gambling was legalized in the Commonwealth. He stated, “For over a decade, the commission has collaborated with various stakeholders, elected officials, operators, and players to create a wealth of knowledge regarding gambling-related harms and player health. The introduction of this new program, developed, owned, and operated by the MGC, will enhance our ability to support Massachusetts residents in need.”

As part of PlayWell, each casino in the state will feature dedicated “PlayWell Hubs,” which serve as spaces where individuals can take a break from gambling, learn about different games, or connect with trained advisors for support.

Mark Vander Linden, MGC Director of Research and Responsible Gaming, noted, “PlayWell is tailored to meet the needs of Massachusetts gamblers. Supported by research and evaluation, our advisors provide timely and relevant tips and resources to patrons, whether they are in the casino or online.”

Additionally, PlayWell will provide tools such as beginner-friendly guides to casino games and options for voluntary self-exclusion programs.

The PlayWell Hubs officially opened at all casinos in Massachusetts on Friday, March 27. A key feature of the program is PlayMyWay, touted as a groundbreaking tool that enables players to set daily gambling limits.

MGM Springfield was one of the casinos to roll out this initiative. Participants have the option to join a voluntary exclusion list, which prevents them from gambling at MGM Springfield or any other casino in Massachusetts.

Support services extend beyond gaming machines. Staff members are available at the hub to offer personalized advice and assistance to visitors.

Daniel Miller, compliance director at MGM Springfield, remarked, “A recent study indicated that these centers should be accessible to everyone, not just those facing gambling-related issues. The new design of this center encourages everyone to visit and take advantage of the resources available.”
