Black Oak Casino Resort in California is proudly celebrating its 25th anniversary, having transformed from a modest casino into a comprehensive resort offering gaming, accommodations, dining, and family-friendly entertainment.
Established on May 15, 2001, by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, the resort began in a simple metal building with a few hundred slot machines in Tuolumne County. Over the years, it has significantly expanded its gaming, hospitality, recreational, and retail options, creating a vibrant destination near Tuolumne City and Sonora.
One of the first major expansions occurred in 2005, adding over 50,000 square feet of gaming space. This expansion brought 1,100 slot machines, 22 table games, a high-limit gaming section, bars, restaurants, and a non-smoking area.
The development also introduced the Seven Sisters dining venue on the third floor, offering stunning views of the property, alongside a 24-lane bowling alley, sports bar, and restaurant. Subsequent renovations enhanced the bowling alley, expanded the arcade, and added a supervised play area for children operated by Kids Quest.
In 2009, a six-story parking garage was completed, followed by the opening of the Bear Creek convenience store and gas station in 2011. This facility features a 24-hour touchless car wash, beer and wine, snacks, drinks, and made-to-order burritos and tacos.
Bear Creek underwent a renovation in 2025, expanding its offerings to include groceries, meats, and fresh produce for both travelers and local residents.
Ty Day Jr., Chairman of the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Board of Directors, stated, “We aim to provide something for all ages and interests, and I believe we have achieved that with our diverse offerings.”
The resort ventured into the lodging sector in 2013 with the launch of The Hotel, a six-story building featuring 148 suites, a coffee shop, fitness center, heated pool, and hot tub.
In May 2025, renovations were made to the hotel, including the addition of 48 new suites connected to the gaming floor, as well as redesigning the original 148 rooms.
The pool area was also upgraded, featuring a larger hot tub and an outdoor TV for sports viewing, along with a new splash zone equipped with water slides, fountains, and a water dump bucket for kids.
For outdoor enthusiasts, an RV park was introduced in 2018, offering nearly 100 RV sites with amenities such as a clubhouse, heated pool and spa, basketball court, pickleball courts, and a catch-and-release fishing pond.
In 2019, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians acquired the only 18-hole golf course in Sonora, Mountain Springs, which reopened as Teleli after renovations. The golf facility includes a pro shop, driving range, bar, and restaurant, along with stay-and-play packages linked to hotel accommodations.
Kevin Day, Chairman of the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal Council, remarked, “Reflecting on the past 25 years, it’s incredible to see how much we’ve accomplished. Black Oak Casino Resort has become a vital part of Tuolumne County, providing meaningful jobs and unforgettable experiences for families.”
In December 2023, the resort opened Elevate, an indoor sports center featuring trampoline attractions, batting cages, sports simulators, dodgeball courts, and a junior ninja warrior course.
“With each project, our goal has been clear – to establish Black Oak Casino Resort as the top destination for families seeking to create lasting memories together,” the statement concluded.
