Google Expands Ban on Prediction Market Ads to New York and Michigan

Google has recently broadened its list of states where advertisements for prediction market contracts are prohibited, now including New York and Michigan. This decision adds to existing restrictions in Nevada and Ohio.

In an update to its Prediction Markets Policy released on July 13, Google announced that starting July 13, 2026, advertising for prediction market contracts and related products will be banned in Michigan and New York.

According to Google’s policy, only prediction market operators that are federally regulated are permitted to advertise in specific U.S. jurisdictions. Advertisers must be authorized by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a Designated Contract Market (DCM) or registered with the National Futures Association (NFA) to promote products listed by an eligible DCM.

The inclusion of Michigan and New York follows Ohio's addition in June and Nevada's earlier this year. Interestingly, the Ohio Casino Control Commission indicated via email that it had not requested Google to impose these restrictions.

Recent legal victories in both Michigan and New York have likely influenced Google's decision. In Michigan, a judge ordered Kalshi to cease offering sports event contracts to residents, with a deadline set for August 12 to comply or incur significant fines. In New York, a federal judge denied Kalshi's request for a preliminary injunction, allowing the state to enforce its gambling laws during ongoing legal proceedings.

While Google has not clarified if these restrictions are directly linked to recent court rulings or regulatory actions, it is noteworthy that all four states currently banned from prediction market advertising have taken steps against prediction market operators or questioned the legality of sports event contracts.
