In the United States, former New Haven Police Chief Carl Jacobson is facing charges for embezzling $85,500 from police funds to fund his online betting activities through DraftKings and FanDuel applications.
According to the investigation, from January 2025 to January 2026, Jacobson placed a total of $4.46 million in bets, resulting in a net loss of $214,400.
The prosecution alleges that between 2024 and early 2026, Jacobson misappropriated $81,500 from the confidential informant payment fund related to drug cases, and an additional $4,000 from the Police Activity League fund in December 2025.
In January, three deputies discovered the missing funds. Following this, Jacobson disclosed his gambling addiction and resigned. On February 20, he was charged with two counts of first-degree embezzlement. He has pleaded not guilty in court.
