In July, DAZN Bet made its debut in Alberta after initially entering the Canadian market through Ontario, marking its first foray into North America. As competition heats up in Canada’s regulated provinces, the sportsbook is focusing on brand recognition, tailored products, and a careful strategy for blending sports media with betting.
In an exclusive interview with Yogonet, Richard Rawlinson, Managing Director of DAZN Bet Canada, elaborated on why Ontario was chosen as the entry point into North America and how the company plans to stand out in Canada’s competitive landscape. He also discussed the importance of a 'second-screen' betting experience in shaping their future strategy.
Rawlinson explained that Ontario was an ideal starting point due to its mature regulatory environment and a market that is already familiar with and trusts the DAZN brand. Following a successful establishment in Europe, Canada was a logical next step. With experienced local leadership in place, DAZN Bet aims to grow responsibly and sustainably, using Ontario as a strategic base for its long-term ambitions across the country.
Ontario boasts one of the most competitive regulated iGaming markets globally. To differentiate itself from established sportsbook brands, DAZN Bet leverages its well-known sports brand that carries global recognition, credibility, and trust. The goal is not merely to offer a similar experience under a different name but to merge DAZN's insights into sports fandom with a localized, high-quality betting experience.
While sports are central to DAZN's identity, Rawlinson noted that Ontario is primarily a casino-led market. Therefore, developing a robust casino offering and creating a seamless connection between sports and casino gaming will be crucial. Over time, users can expect unique co-branded casino content tailored specifically for DAZN Bet.
DAZN has previously tested watch-and-bet experiences in other regions. When asked about the future of sports streaming and betting in Canada, Rawlinson emphasized that while DAZN's sports presence provides a genuine connection to fans, their integration approach in Canada will be cautious. Currently, there are no plans for customers to place bets directly through the DAZN streaming platform.
The immediate focus is on providing a strong second-screen experience, allowing fans to watch on DAZN while engaging with DAZN Bet separately. Any further integration will depend on broadcasting rights, regulatory standards, customer consent, and maintaining a clear boundary between streaming and betting operations.
As sportsbooks increasingly compete on media, content, and user engagement rather than just odds and promotions, Rawlinson believes that fans desire more than just competitive odds. They seek relevant content, quick withdrawals, personalization, product quality, and trustworthy brands. DAZN Bet is well-positioned in this regard, as sports content and audiences are integral to DAZN's overall business model.
In Canada, customer acquisition will be a phased and disciplined process to ensure that the product meets the high expectations of Canadian players. Retention will be the true measure of success, and DAZN Bet plans to utilize its understanding of sports fans and customer behavior to provide personalized, responsible experiences that keep users engaged.
With Alberta's regulated iGaming market now operational, Rawlinson sees numerous opportunities in the province. DAZN Bet was ready from day one in Alberta, demonstrating its commitment to the Canadian market. Alberta already has a well-established online gaming audience, which presents a promising landscape for growth.
