Gitxaala Enterprises has officially reopened Chances Casino in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, as part of an extensive redevelopment initiative. This plan aims to merge Chances Casino with the Crest Hotel and a proposed spa, establishing what the company describes as “Northern B.C.’s premier resort destination.”
Blair Mirau, the director of business development at Gitxaala Enterprises, emphasized that this development will transform Prince Rupert from merely a transit point into a sought-after destination. He noted, “Many view Prince Rupert as just a gateway to places like Haida Gwaii or Vancouver Island, but we believe that with the right approach, we can create a unique destination.”
The company has secured two land agreements for the project, including the acquisition of the lane connecting the casino and hotel, as well as the casino's parking area. The revamped casino features new gaming chairs, slot machines, carpets, and flooring, all part of a broader strategy for long-term development.
Renovations at the Crest Convention Center have also been completed, with a new commercial kitchen designed to reflect the local landscape. Since acquiring the casino in February of last year, Gitxaala Enterprises, in collaboration with the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, has invested over $2 million in enhancements.
Currently, the waterfront hotel and casino employs around 150 individuals, with an anticipated increase of 10 to 15 jobs as the development progresses. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation reports that nearly $8 million in gambling revenue has been distributed to the city, with the municipality allocating close to $500,000 last year for arts, culture, and community programs.
Mirau highlighted the unique connection between the Gitxaala Nation and the local community, setting this resort project apart from typical chain hotels. “This connection to place is extremely important, and it’s not something you’ll find in a chain hotel,” he stated.
In recent years, Gitxaala Enterprises has acquired multiple properties in Prince Rupert, including the Crest Hotel, as part of their commitment to fostering economic opportunities for the community. Linda Innes (Lou Ga Gwelks), the company board chair and Elected Chief, remarked, “The investments we are making are focused on building a strong future for our people, creating opportunities for our youth, and ensuring our leadership is reflected throughout our territory.”
