23% of Young American Men Gamble Daily, Study Reveals

A recent study by the Institute for Family Studies, published on August 5, reveals that 23% of young American men engage in gambling on a daily basis. The research, based on a representative survey conducted by YouGov among 2,000 men aged 18-29, highlights several key findings.

In terms of gambling involvement, the study shows that 23% of young men gamble every day, while another 12% do so several times a week. Additionally, 21% gamble once a week or less. The survey also found that 44% of respondents play video games multiple times a day, and 42% watch pornography daily or several times a week.

The impact of gambling on players' well-being is concerning. Approximately two-thirds of regular online gamblers acknowledge that gambling negatively affects their mental health. Moreover, 10% of young men report serious gambling-related issues, while 29% describe their problems as moderate.

Interestingly, working men seem to cope with gambling better than students and the unemployed, who experience stronger negative feelings. Among daily gamblers, 66% agree with the statement, 'I tend to consider myself a failure,' compared to 42% of young men overall. This sentiment is also significantly higher among those who watch pornography daily, engage in day trading, or participate in fantasy sports.

The authors emphasize that the survey captures correlation rather than causation. They suggest that loneliness and depression drive young men towards such activities for comfort, while these activities, in turn, exacerbate their isolation.
